What to Expect at Southern Utah Wado-Kai Karate

At Southern Utah Wado-Kai, classes are rooted in the fundamentals of traditional Japanese karate, including proper stances, punches, kicks, and combination movements. Japanese customs, etiquette, and dojo manners are an integral part of each class, creating a respectful and focused training environment.

Class Structure

Each karate class begins with a light warm-up, followed by a traditional bow-in ceremony, which helps students prepare mentally for training. Students will learn:

  • Foundational techniques

  • Kata (pre-arranged forms)

  • Stages of kumite (sparring drills and strategy)

Each karate class begins with a light warm-up, followed by a bow-in ceremony rooted in tradition, reinforcing the values of focus and respect.

All Ages and Ranks Welcome

  • Classes are grouped by age, not rank.

  • Beginners and advanced students often train in the same space, promoting a shared learning environment.

  • Our philosophy: every rank has something to teach—and to learn.

Rank Advancement

Progression through ranks is a valuable part of karate training. Students are invited to test by instructor recommendation only, based on:

  • Demonstrated mastery of required techniques

  • Consistent class attendance

  • Positive dojo attitude and effort
